Medicare Open Enrollment runs each year from October 15 to December 7. It's your once-a-year chance to review your coverage and make changes for the coming year. Even if you're happy with your current plan, a quick review can save you money and avoid surprises.
1. Check your medications
Plan formularies change every year. A drug that was covered last year may move to a higher tier — or not be covered at all. Make a list of your current medications and confirm they're still covered at a price you're comfortable with.
2. Verify your doctors are still in-network
Networks change. Before re-enrolling, confirm your primary doctor, specialists, and preferred hospitals remain in the plan's network.
3. Compare total costs — not just the premium
The cheapest premium isn't always the cheapest plan. Add up:
- Monthly premium
- Deductibles
- Copays and coinsurance
- Out-of-pocket maximum
A slightly higher premium with lower copays can cost less over the year if you see doctors often.
4. Review supplemental benefits
Many Medicare Advantage plans add dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits. Check what's included and whether you'll actually use them.
5. Get help if you're unsure
Medicare decisions can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to navigate them alone. A licensed agent can compare plans side by side and help you choose with confidence — at no cost to you.
